All Souls Day and All Saints Day 2011

My brothers and sisters in the Lord, when they approach these days some parishioners ask me about the position of the Church regarding the celebration of Halloween. What is the Catholic way to celebrate Halloween?  When the Church’s Solemnity of All Saints was moved to November 1 (back in the ninth century), it gave Catholics a chance to baptize an ancient pagan tradition. The Celtic peoples used to celebrate their New Year on November 1, and they believed that the spirits of the dead, both good and evil, wandered earth again the night before. To protect themselves from those spirits, they had ceremonies involving costumes and fire –lighting bonfires to keep the ghouls away. On November 1 we honor and ask for intercession from the saints –the dead who died in friendship with Christ and are now in heaven– while on November 2 we pray for the souls in purgatory –the dead who died in friendship with Christ but are still being purified before they can enjoy the fullness of communion with God. It isn’t hard to give a Halloween party a Christian spin, when this is understood. Costumes can be those of saints. Treats can be related to heaven.  Games can be fun, celebrating the hope for eternal life. And that brings us to the spiritual principle at work here. As the Church expanded into pagan lands, Christians had to figure out how to communicate their faith to people with radically different worldviews. Almost always, the most fruitful interaction was that in which the Christians were able to find some seeds of truth or beauty in the pagan practices, embraces them, and shows their more complete meaning in the Christian context. In other words, whenever missionaries met the pagans where they were at, the pagans more easily learned to understand and appreciate the Christian faith. On the other hand, when the Christians met pagan customs only with blanket condemnation, progress was harder to come by. There is a great quotation of Pope St Gregory the Great: «Do not destroy the pagan temples, but instead sprinkle them with holy water, set up altars in them, and place relics there. In the places where it has been the pagan custom to offer sacrifices to their diabolical idols, allow them to celebrate Christian festivals instead, in another form, on the same date. For example, on the festival of the blessed Martyrs, have the faithful make bowers of branches, and organize love feasts there. In permitting the converted these external pleasures, the joys of the soul will be more easily acquired. We cannot wipe the whole post from these savage souls all at once. A man does not climb a mountain in great bounds, but by taking slow, steady steps[1]. Today we are missionaries in a neo-pagan culture, in many ways. If we want to bring Christ’s wandering sheep back into the fold, we need to follow the same pattern of creative evangelization. I hope you can do so this upcoming Halloween ■ Fr. Agustín, Pastor.

Mis queridos hermanos en el Señor, con la llegada de la fiesta de Halloween muchas preguntas vienen a nuestra mente: ¿Cómo dar a los niños una enseñanza auténtica de la fe católica en estas fechas? ¿Cómo hacer que se diviertan de manera  verdaderamente cristiana? ¿Qué podemos enseñarles a los niños sobre esta fiesta? Ante la realidad que inunda nuestro medio y que es promovida sin medida por el consumismo… ¿debemos taparnos los ojos para no ver la realidad? ¿Buscar buenas excusas para justificar su presencia y no darle mayor importancia a esta celebración? ¿Debemos prohibirles a nuestros hijos participar en el Halloween mientras que sus vecinos y amigos lo hacen? La respuesta no es sencilla, sin embargo creemos que sí hay algunas cosas que podemos hacer. Lo primero es organizar una catequesis con los niños en los días anteriores al Halloween, con el objeto de enseñarles el por qué de la festividad católica de Todos los Santos y los Fieles Difuntos, haciéndoles ver la importancia de celebrar nuestros Santos, como modelos de la fe, como verdaderos seguidores de Cristo. Es buena idea que los niños inviten a sus amigos, para que cada vez más niños aprendan las tradiciones cristianas. Debemos explicarles de manera sencilla y clara pero firme lo negativo que hay en el Halloween. Es necesario explicarles que Dios quiere que seamos buenos y que no nos identifiquemos ni con las brujas ni con monstruos, pues nosotros somos hijos de Dios y estamos llamados a la luz, nunca a la oscuridad. Otra idea muy buena y saludable es poner en casa éstos días un altar de muertos como se hace en México desde hace muchos años. Con ése altar lo que se busca es recodar a los difuntos y orar por ellos para que estén gozando de la presencia de Dios. Aquí en la parroquia tenemos uno puesto, los invitamos a que se detengan un momento delante de él y les expliquen a los niños qué significa. Hay, pues, mucho qué hacer en éstos días, y mucho qué enseñar a los más pequeños. Que la Santísima Virgen, auxilio de los cristianos, ponga en nuestras mentes las palabras adecuadas para saber transmitir tradiciones auténticamente católicas. ■ P. Agustín. Párroco.

Detacho families?

Dear brothers in the Lord, a few days ago I found something that caught my attention deeply, saddened me, and that leads me to think what are we doing Catholics to defend the concept of family that God wants us to have. I have always believed that toys help children to learn and prepare them for life but for a life with values ​​and virtues. Well, Mr. Ben Forman (www.benformandesign.co.uk) thinks differently, he has introduced a new dollhouse to “help” today’s modern preschooler prepare for the inevitable unhappy changes in her family structure.  It’s called Detacho. Detacho families, like so many contemporary families, can reconfigure themselves, either expanding with the birth of new siblings, or separating into smaller groups of married or divorced or cohabiting adults and their complacent children.  And Detacho dollhouses meet the need—transforming from a single-family home with its smiling parents into two or even three smaller units, able to house new stepparents and stepsiblings, or two mommies, or to adapt to whatever the parents’ new living situation might be. Detacho mommies and daddies are sometimes happy, and then they are all kissy-face, attracted to one another. But sometimes the stress caused by daddy’s extramarital affair makes mommy so angry she’d like to starch his shorts.  Then, with a quick twist of the hairdo, smiling Detacho mommy turns into frowning, unhappy Detacho mommy.  And thanks to the magnets implanted inside their skulls, smiling Detacho mommy and daddy can kiss, but frowning. Mr. Forman thinks it’s good to prepare children for the harsh reality of divorce. With Detacho, children can project their feelings onto the play scene.  They can practice feeling lonely and scared, and waving goodbye to daddy and his new girlfriend.  They can play at getting along with a bossy new big brother who has just moved in.  They can hide from mommy’s new boyfriend, who’s always checking the fridge for another beer… My question is simple: how far have we come?  What we have come to: doll houses for divorce? Questions that demand our attention and our action. What are we teaching our children? ■ Fr. Agustín, Pastor. 

¿Qué concepto de familia estamos transmitiendo?

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, hace pocos días me encontré en la red algo que me llamó la atención y me llevó a pensar seriamente qué estamos haciendo como católicos para enseñar a nuestros niños el concepto de familia que nosotros hemos aprendimos de acuerdo a nuestra fe en Cristo y nuestra pertenencia a la Iglesia católica.  Y digo esto a propósito de la creación de una casas de muñecas que acaban de salir al mercado. Éstas casas, diseñadas por un comerciante inglés, tienen la intención de “ayudar” a los niños a “entender” qué hay que hacer cuando la familia se rompe, o papá tiene una aventura y mamá se enoja, o cuando mamá tiene un nuevo novio (o incluso una novia) una vez que sobrevino la separación y el divorcio, etc. etc. etc. Mi pregunta es muy sencilla pero que debemos responder con claridad: ¿les hablamos a los niños del terrible drama del divorcio antes de enseñarles el valor de la fidelidad, la perseverancia, el esfuerzo y el sacrificio? En nuestra sociedad ¿hemos aceptado el divorcio como una opción, como una alternativa, como una salida fácil que no requiere esfuerzo? ¿Qué están aprendiendo nuestros hijos y cuál es el concepto de familia que tienen dentro de ellos? Queridos hermanos, hoy más que nunca debemos reiterar nuestra opción por la familia, y  promover una paternidad y maternidad responsables a la luz del Magisterio de la Iglesia. Entre todos debemos formar a los niños y los jóvenes en una sana idea de la vida matrimonial y familiar, acompañar a los esposos más jóvenes a fortalecer su relación matrimonial, y a acoger con amor a las familias que atraviesan por una situación difícil.  No tengamos miedo, hemos de confiar en Jesucristo y en la intercesión de nuestra Madre de Guadalupe  quienes quieren familias unidas en las que se alabe el nombre de Dios.  Que en éstas semanas del mes del Rosario oremos en familia por ésta intención. Aunque el divorcio es real y está a nuestro alrededor y quizá alguien cercano a nosotros lo ha sufrido, los católicos no lo consideramos como una opción, porque creemos en la fidelidad, en la perseverancia, en el sacrificio y en el amor ■ P. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship

My brothers and sisters in Christ, in this edition of our Pastor's Bench I write on a difficult subject. I have asked the Holy Spirit to guide me and give me wisdom as I address this topic.  Priests and pastors are often told that they should not become involved in politics. This is for a couple of reasons. One of them certainly is that we need to be able to pastor to the whole congregation. If a pastor frequently expresses political views, he is certain to push away those members of the congregation who do not share his views.  They, in turn, will move to a community more congenial to their beliefs. The other reason is the idea that there needs to be a clear separation between Church and State.  It is believed that the pastor who becomes involved in politics breaches that separation. Recently, the U.S. bishops reaffirmed their 2007 document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. This document may be found at:

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship offers a wide range of web-based and written materials and tools to assist pastors, parishes, Catholic organizations and individuals to reflect on the topic of political responsibility. As pastor of this community, I invite each of you to read it slowly and carefully. More than ever, America needs Catholics who have strong and well-formed opinions on political and moral issues.  As Catholics, we must know where we stand and what we want for our society and future generations. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the Church’s teaching on political responsibility, human life, human rights, and justice and peace need to be shared more widely and effectively. While it is true that we must follow the command of the Lord "give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s", we have a  serious obligation to bear witness to our faith.  Never be ashamed to be Catholic and to follow the teachings of our mother, the Church. We must always strive to be better christians and better citizens of this country that has received God's many blessings. May the Blessed Virgin, patroness and Queen of the United States help us in this important task to which all priests and laity, are called ■ Fr. Agustín, Pastor. 

"De bien nacidos es ser agradecidos"

Mi querida comunidad latina de St. Vincent de Paul, con me han oído decir muchas veces, yo considero a las dos comunidades de nuestra parroquia –la latina y la americana- como mis dos hijas, y quiero que convivan juntas y que juntos caminemos hacia la patria definitiva que es el cielo. Hemos trabajado mucho juntos (la celebración del domingo 25 fue una prueba de ello) y doy muchas gracias a Dios.  En el reverso de éstas líneas invito a la comunidad americana a que lea un documento muy importante que los obispos norteamericanos han vuelto a publicar y que trata sobre la postura que los católicos debemos tomar ante las elecciones del próximo año, y también ante los retos políticos y morales que siempre habrá en el país. Como su párroco soy consciente de que muchos de ustedes no tomarán parte en las votaciones o no siguen con mucho interés el desarrollo de la política de los Estados Unidos. A lo que sí estamos llamados todos y nuestra consciencia nos lo recuerda diariamente es a dar testimonio de nuestra fe cristiana, a no avergonzarnos de ser católicos, y sobre todo a luchar en familia y personalmente por ser mejores católicos y mejores ciudadanos.  Hoy los invito a que en la celebración de la Eucaristía le demos gracias a Dios por la bendición que supone vivir en un país con tantos beneficios, aún cuando suponga también sacrificios y renuncias.  Aunque muchos de nosotros no hemos nacido aquí, éste país nos ha acogido y nos ha dado una fuente de trabajo y un sitio seguro, y lo más importante: la libertad para profesar nuestra fe.  Son muchos, pues, los motivos para estar agradecidos y grande el compromiso de dar lo mejor de nosotros con el ejemplo de vida cristiana: defendiendo la vida, protegiendo al que menos tiene, cuidando los valores de la familia como la comunicación, el perdón, la convivencia, etc.   Que la Santísima Virgen, patrona y reina de éste gran país, nos ayude a dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos, a ser siempre factor de unidad, no de discordia o desunión; a ser agradecidos: ya lo dice el refrán: “de bien nacidos es ser agradecidos”.

..Ecos de la celebracion de los 50 años de nuestra comunidad parroquial...

October, month of the Rosary

My dear brothers and sisters, the celebration of the 50^th anniversary of our parish community is over, but life goes on and there are many things that come and they are important. With the visit of the Archbishop and the daily celebration of the Eucharist we have been renewed in our spiritual life and have the strength to keep walking as People of God who walks into the house of the Father. October is marked by devotion to our Lady of the Rosary and for a more consistent and stronger prayer for the missions. His Holiness Benedict XVI has two major intentions for this month: that the celebration of World Mission Day may foster in the People of God a passion for evangelization with the willingness to support the missions with prayer and economic aid for the poorest Churches (Missionary intention), and that that the terminally ill may be supported by their faith in God and the love of their brothers and sisters (General intention). October is also marked in the United States and in our community because we will start preparing to receive the new edition of the Roman Missal. This is a new opportunity that the Church gives us to learn more about our faith, to open ourselves to new horizons with renewed hearts. Let us ask the Spirit of God that we not lose our focus and clear priorities, and that God himself is at the center of our daily lives. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, while we contemplate the mysteries of her life, teach us to walk towards her Son, to help us find him in the liturgy and giving thanks for the many blessings we have in our parish community ■ Fr. Echoes of the celebration of 50 years in the parish

Octubre mes del Rosario

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, ya terminó la celebración del aniversario de la parroquia pero la vida sigue y hay muchas cosas que vienen y que son importantes. Con la visita del Arzobispo y la diaria celebración de la Eucaristía hemos sido renovados en nuestra vida espiritual y tenemos las fuerzas suficientes para seguir caminando como Pueblo de Dios que camina hacia la casa del Padre. Este mes que comienza, Octubre, está marcado por la devoción a nuestra Señora, la Virgen del Rosario, y por una oración más constante y más fuerte por las misiones. Nuestro quedísimo padre el Papa Benedicto XVI tiene dos intenciones importantes éste mes, la primera es la oración por los enfermos terminales, para que en sus sufrimientos sean sostenidos por la fe en Dios y el amor de sus hermanos, y la segunda es que la celebración de la Jornada Misionera Mundial acreciente en el Pueblo de Dios la pasión por la evangelización y el apoyo a la actividad misionera con la oración y la ayuda económica a las Iglesias más pobres, es momento para pensar cómo vamos a apoyar al Papa en éstas dos intenciones y cómo vamos a acrecentar nuestro amor a la Santísima Virgen. Si al cabo de un tiempo nuestra parroquia es más eucarística y más mariana, nuestro esfuerzo habrá valido la pana. Vamos a pedirle al mismo Espíritu de Dios que nos ayude a centrar nuestra atención en lo importante, a tener claras nuestras prioridades, a buscar a Jesucristo en la liturgia y a orar sin desfallecer, contando siempre con el amor y la protección de la Virgen, Madre de la Iglesia y reina de nuestra parroquia ■ P. We celebrate this morning!!

Thanks to God and His generosity and His providence we have been able to reach this Sunday to celebrate the first 50 years of our parish community. It’s a day of thanksgiving and joy, we can say that the Lord has done great things for us and we are glad[1]. So glad and so grateful.

Thank you very much to all who have wished to join this celebration, especially [bishop and bishop] and my brothers priests. Thanks in a very special way to the former pastor of this parish, is because of what they sowed yesterday that today we can gather and celebrate.

By a happy coincidence this Sunday we are treated to one of the most beautiful passages about Jesus in the entire Bible. Jesus our Lord and savior emptied Himself of his divinity and became a human being like us, and more than this, he became a slave for each one of us, to teach us that humility and service are two virtues that we need in lives every single day.

Today, with this big mass, with this anniversary we are called again and again to work in the Father's vineyard. The vineyard is your house and my house, your family and the parish community. The vineyard is that place where others are seeking the person of Christ in us. People around us are looking for Jesus; people around us are looking for meaning in their lives, are we willing to help others find Christ?

Christ must be the origin and end of life. The basis of everything. How often we forget that he must be the center of our thoughts and desires and efforts. If we are here this morning, is for Him, if we organize this celebration, is for Him.  The glory and recognition and applause are NOT for the pastor or the pastoral council, or the staff or volunteers. The glory is for Jesus Christ who in a few minutes will be with us in the species of bread and wine changed into body and blood.

So, let's not lose focus this morning. The 50 years of the parish are very important but not the most important. The parish and its buildings are not forever. The parish community is not forever. The pastor, thanks be to God is not forever. The only thing that remains forever is Jesus Christ. For him it is all the glory. For him it is all the recognition. Only for Jesus Christ we organize this Mass, to worship him and ask him to be the foundation of this parish community.

St. Paul put it so well in those closing words of today’s second reading; God bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father[2]…

What we are asking this morning at Mass? Three things. Unity in our parish community. Love and adoration to the person of Jesus Christ. And the protection and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Where are we without the help of Our Lady? She is the queen of heaven, the mother of the Church and the mother of this parish; to her all our love and veneration. All our loving to Jesus through Mary, all our loving to Mary through Jesus. Amen. ■

50 Aniversario de la Parroquia

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en el Señor:

A finales de septiembre vamos a celebrar los 50 años de la fundación de nuestra parroquia. El Domingo pasado olvidé traducir la invitación que hice a toda la comunidad parroquial a participar de estos dos grandes eventos.

Originalmente se sugirió una gran celebración con fuegos artificiales, una cena para todos y regalos para conmemorar nuestros 50 años, sin embargo a pesar de que es un momento de gran celebración, es también tiempo de reflexión y acción sobre la actual crisis económica y las dificultades experimentadas por familias de nuestra comunidad y nuestro país. Muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas están sin trabajo y sin estabilidad económica. Estos problemas no son sólo económicos, son también retos morales y pruebas de nuestra fe. A medida que nos acercamos a los 50 años de la parroquia, más del 9% de los estadounidenses están desempleados y no pueden encontrar trabajo. Otros temen la pérdida de puestos de trabajo. Los salarios no son suficientes para cubrir los gastos. Como resultado, muchos han perdido sus hogares. Como cristianos, debemos vivir en solidaridad con los menos afortunados y los que luchan en estos tiempos económicos difíciles. Es por eso que decidimos celebrar con algo que es simple pero al mismo tiempo profundamente importante y significativo: la Santa Misa.

El Consejo Pastoral y un servidor decidimos entonces organizar una misa especial para dar gracias a Dios por estos 50 años de vida parroquial, la cual se celebrará el Domingo, 25 de septiembre 2011 a las 11:30 de la mañana en la zona próxima al Centro Parroquial. Pensamos que era mejor tener una misa al aire libre para poder así recibir a todos los que deseen participar. Para aquellos que deseen asistir a la misa en la iglesia ese fin de semana, la Misa se celebrará, como de costumbre, el sábado, 24 de septiembre a las 5PM, y el domingo, 25 de septiembre a las 8 AM. No tendremos la misa del domingo a las 10 AM, 12 PM ni a las 2 PM. Los invitamos a todos a unirse a nosotros a la celebración de las 11:30 AM

Tendremos preparada una tienda de campaña y sillas para todos; lo único que pedimos que traigan es un buen corazón y una gran actitud. Posiblemente tendremos un día soleado y caluroso, pero con gusto le ofreceremos a Dios esa pequeña incomodidad en acción de gracias por nuestra parroquia.

Al día siguiente, Lunes, 26 de septiembre 2011 a las 6 PM, tendremos la ceremonia de la dedicación del altar. Mons. Gustavo García-Siller, Arzobispo de San Antonio, presidirá la celebración eucarística. El rito de la dedicación de una iglesia y su altar está considerado como uno de los más solemnes de la liturgia de la Iglesia Católica. Una iglesia es el lugar donde se reúne la comunidad cristiana para escuchar la Palabra de Dios, para ofrecer a alabanza a Su santo nombre, y para celebrar los misterios de nuestra fe. Es también el lugar donde se reserva el Santísimo Sacramento de la Eucaristía.

El comité organizador ha trabajo mucho y con gran cariño para coordinar la celebración, reuniendo los fondos necesarios para estos eventos, ellos merecen nuestro reconocimiento; nuestro Señor sabe quiénes son y estoy seguro que Él sabrá recompensarlos ​​abundantemente. O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions, who gather today at this site, the scene of incredible violence and pain.

We ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died here -- the heroic first responders: our firefighters, police officers, emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on September 11, 2001.

We ask you, in your compassion to bring healing to those who, because of their presence here that day, suffer from injuries and illness. Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope.

"We are mindful as well of those who suffered death, injury, and loss on the same day at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Our hearts are one with theirs as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering.

"God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the Earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred.

"God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant that those whose lives we pared may live so that the lives lost here may not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, Strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all.
