The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (2013)

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, this weekend with great joy and enthusiasm we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord, a very beautiful feast that also gives us the opportunity to unite our intentions to the intentions of our Holy Father Pope Francis. From the Cook Islands to Chile, Burkina Faso, Taiwan, Iraq, Bangladesh, the United States, and the Philippines, the dioceses will be synchronized with St. Peter’s and will pray for the intentions proposed by the Pope. The first is: “For the Church spread throughout the world and united today in the adoration of the Most Holy Eucharist as a sign of unity. May the Lord make her ever more obedient to hearing his Word in order to stand before the world ‘ever more beautiful, without stain or blemish, but holy and blameless.’ That through her faithful announcement, the Word that saves may still resonate as the bearer of mercy and may increase love to give full meaning to pain and suffering, giving back joy and serenity.” The second one: “For those around the world who still suffer slavery and who are victims of war, human trafficking, drug running, and slave labour. For the children and women who are suffering from every type of violence. May their silent scream for help be heard by a vigilant Church so that, gazing upon the crucified Christ, she may not forget the many brothers and sisters who are left at the mercy of violence.” Today let us reflect and give thanks for the miracle of the Eucharist, let us give thanks that Our Lord wanted to stay with us forever. If our parish community is not focused on the love of the Eucharist, in the love of our blessed Mother the Virgin Mary and in service to the needy, everything else is useless, a waste of time. As parish community, let us ask to the Lord that in His mercy He grant us the gift of being souls of Eucharist, attending the celebration of Sunday Mass with more love, devotion and reverence; spending more time in front of the tabernacle, in prayer, in silence, in reparation for personal sins and the sins the world. ■ Fr. Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor (2013)

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, vamos a celebrar la solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor, y con mucha alegría nos unimos en espíritu a la adoración eucarística en la basílica de San Pedro bajo el lema Un solo señor, una sola fe, elegido por nuestro santo padre el Papa Francisco. Desde las Islas Cook a Reikiavik, pasando por Chile, Burkina Faso, Taiwan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Estados Unidos o Filipinas unamos nuestras mentes y nuestro corazón y oremos juntos por las intenciones propuestas por el Papa. La primera intención es por la Iglesia, extendida en todo el mundo y hoy en señal de unidad recogida en la adoración de la Santísima Eucaristía. Que el Señor la haga cada vez más obediente a la escucha de su Palabra para presentarse ante el mundo siempre “mas hermosa, sin mancha, ni arruga, sino santa e inmaculada. Que a través de su fiel anuncio, la Palabra que salva resuene aún como portadora de misericordia y haga que el amor se redoble para dar un sentido pleno al dolor y al sufrimiento, devolviendo alegría y serenidad. La segunda intención del Papa Francisco es por aquellos que en los diversos lugares del mundo viven el sufrimiento de nuevas esclavitudes y son víctimas de la guerra, de la trata de personas, del narcotráfico y del trabajo esclavo; por los niños y las mujeres que padecen todas las formas de la violencia ¡Que su grito silencioso de ayuda encuentre a la Iglesia vigilante para que, teniendo la mirada puesta en Cristo crucificado no se olvide de tantos hermanos y hermanas dejados a merced de la violencia! Como comunidad parroquial oremos juntos por todos aquellos que, además, se encuentran en la precariedad económica, sobre todo los desempleados, los ancianos, los inmigrantes, los que carecen de hogar, los presos y cuantos experimentan la marginación. ¡Que la oración de la Iglesia y su cercanía activa les de consuelo y ayuda en la esperanza y fuerza y audacia en la defensa de la dignidad de la persona! Pero sobre todo demos gracias porque en Su inmenso amor el Señor quiso quedarse para siempre con nosotros en la Eucaristía ■ P. Agustín, párroco. 

Confirmations 2013 at St. Vincent de Paul

On the evening of Pentecost Sunday, we had our celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation. Fr. Heliodoro Lucatero, representing Archbishop Gustavo, 

came and presides over the Holy Mass;

we had a very nice ceremony.

En la tarde del Domingo de Pentecostés, tuvimos nuestra celebración del sacramento de la Confirmación. 

El P. Heliodoro Lucatero vino en representación del Arzobispo,

y tuvimos una ceremonia muy bonita. 

Proclamation of the Pastoral Vision of the Archdiocese of San Antonio (may 2013)

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, last weekend Archbishop Gustavo proclaimed, in a beautiful ceremony outside San Fernando Cathedral the vision he has for our archdiocese for the next years. Along with this edition of The Pastor's bench you find the three priorities of the Archbishop and his ideas of how to do it. The task of building the Particular Church of San Antonio it is not only in the hands of our Archbishop, priests and deacons, but of all the baptized: also depends on you, yeah, you've got this paper between your hands. Soon will come a new priest to take my place as pastor of this parish community, and surely he will have some ideas on how to carry out these initiatives of the Archbishop. It is important that you collaborate with the new pastor, not only complain about things that are wrong in the parish or that can be improved, but you work shoulder to shoulder, in parish activities such as the ministry of reader, Eucharistic minister, coordinator of the Mass, ACTS, Guadalupanos, CYO, Jovenes para Cristo, etc. Let's be honest, we tend to see things in a negative way, but if we make an assessment and an a good examination of conscience, we have thousands of reasons to get on our knees and thank God for all that He gives us. The psalmist wonders what to do in good times, and the answer comes from the Spirit of God: How can I repay the LORD for all the great good done for me? I will raise the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD[1]. I'm going to propose something to you: What if the next time you find something that bother you, rather than writing a letter complaining or criticizing, you first do a time of prayer, you read the ideas of the archbishop, and then you present to your pastor a solution? It is very easy to criticize and very easy to say that the Church should change this or that, but how hard is to give our time and effort, can you imagine what would have happened if Jesus had had the same heart sometimes as miserable as the one we have humans? Think about it in all this that I write to you today. Think the Archbishop is supported by all of us, to build the Universal Church as embodied in this Particular Church of San Antonio; we should work shoulder to shoulder with him, with the help of the Spirit and the intercession of Mary, our Lady ■ Fr. Proclamación de la Visión Pastoral de la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio (Mayo 2013)

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, el pasado fin de semana nuestro querido Arzobispo proclamó, en una hermosa ceremonia junto a la Catedral de San Fernando, la visión que él tiene para nuestra arquidiócesis. Junto a ésta edición de The Pastor's bench encontrarás en inglés y en español las tres prioridades del Arzobispo y las ideas de cómo llevarlas acabo. La tarea de construir ésta iglesia particular de San Antonio no está solamente en manos del señor Arzobispo, de los sacerdotes y diáconos (la jerarquía de la Iglesia), sino de todos los bautizados: depende también de ti, sí, de ti que tienes éste papel entre tus manos. Pronto vendrá un nuevo sacerdote a tomar mi lugar como párroco de ésta comunidad parroquial, y seguramente él tendrá algunas ideas sobre cómo llevar a cabo éstas iniciativas del Arzobispo. Es importante que tú colabores con él,  que no solamente te quejes de las cosas que están mal en la parroquia o que se pueden mejorar, sino que trabajes, hombro con hombro, en las actividades de la parroquia. Seamos honestos: tendemos a ver de manera negativa las cosas, pero si hacemos un balance y un buen examen de conciencia encontraremos miles de razones para caer de rodillas y darle gracias a Dios por todo lo que Él nos regala. El salmista se pregunta qué hacer en tiempos de bonanza, y la respuesta viene del Espíritu de Dios:  ¿Cómo pagaré al Señor todo el bien que me ha hecho? ¡Alzaré la copa del Señor invocando su nombre![1].  Te voy a proponer algo a ti. La próxima vez que a te moleste algo de la parroquia o de la arquidiócesis, en lugar de escribir una carta quejándote, o criticando, ¿por qué, primero, no haces un rato de oración, luego lees las ideas del arzobispo, y después nos presentas una solución? Es muy fácil criticar y muy fácil decir que la Iglesia debe cambiar en tal o cual cosa, lo difícil es regalar nuestro tiempo y nuestro esfuerzo, ¿te imaginas qué hubiera pasado si Jesucristo hubiese tenido el mismo corazón, a veces tan miserable, como el que tenemos los humanos? Piensa en esto y ayúdanos con tu actitud a construir, no a desedificar. Ayudemos a nuestro querido Arzobispo en la tarea de construir la Iglesia universal en ésta Iglesia particular de San Antonio ■ P. Agustín, párroco.

Pentecost Sunday (2013)

My brothers and sisters in Christ, we live in the midst of chaotic times as we witness the meltdown of financial markets and the effects of global warming. As crises continue to build, we may find ourselves confused or fearful. We may want to gather in the upper room of our lives with our closest friends and close the door on a troubled world. Yet chaos always calls for creative and brave response, it always beckons us to open to holy surprise and to the grace of God. Today is the feast of Pentecost, that glorious final  day of the season of resurrection. The apostles were together experiencing bewilderment over how to move forward when the Holy Spirit flows among them and breathes courage into their hearts. It says that those who witnessed this event were "amazed and perplexed." Some were confused, others cynical. Peter reminds the crowds of the words the prophet Joel declared, that all will be called to dreams and visions, all will need to be attentive to signs and wonders. So, the story of Pentecost asks us a very important question: How do I let my expectations and cynicism close my heart to the new voice rising like a fierce wind? The start of Lent (February) probably feels like long ago. We began that journey marked with ashes, reminded of our earthiness and our limitations. Hopefully we laid aside some of what weighs us down so that as we moved from the cross into resurrection, we could be more spacious and open to possibility. Pentecost immerses us in the brilliance of fire and the power of wind, calling us to trust in something bigger than we are, to remember that our imagining is always smaller than the divine reality. On this day, together as a family and parish community, let us invoke the Spirit of God, together let us give thanks for the gift of our faith, for the gift of belonging to the Catholic Church and, do me a last favor: help me with your prayer to give thanks to the Lord for my thirteen years of priesthood. Yes: I was ordained as a priest thirteen year ago on a beautiful evening of Pentecost ■ Fr. Agustin, pastor.

Domingo de Pentecostés (2013)

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, cuentan la historia de un profesor universitario que al comienzo del curso, para darse a conocer a sus alumnos, extendía un mapamundi en el pizarrón, y decía: “Señores, miren esto de norte a sur, y de este a oeste. Miren el fracaso de Cristo. Tantos siglos procurando meter en la vida de los hombres su doctrina, y vean los resultados”. Hoy, que celebramos la hermosa fiesta del Espíritu Santo y el comienzo de la actividad misionera y evangelizadora de la Iglesia hemos de reflexionar en el hecho de que Jesús quiso hacer a cada hombre y a cada mujer cooperadores libre de su obra redentora, y tomarnos en serio éste deseo ¡La obra del Señor no ha fracasado! Su doctrina y su vida están fecundando continuamente el mundo. Por eso hoy damos gracias, porque la redención de Cristo está animada constantemente por la fuerza del Espíritu Santo; el fuego del Espíritu de Dios es suficiente y sobreabundante:

Hoy desciende el Espíritu de fuego

al corazón creyente de la Iglesia,

el Señor que la quema y atraviesa

enciende con su llama al universo.

Ebrios del Santo Espíritu, los Doce

rebosan de carismas y alabanzas;

Dios baja el Sinaí, y en llamarada

y en ímpetu de amor retumba el monte.

Razas y pueblos quedan convocados;

Dios se muestra en Sión, la bella altura,

y en voz concorde aquí a los hombres junta,

Neat, clean, and modest...

My brothers and sisters in Christ, there is another issue in which I've been thinking about for a long time, and now I'm leaving the parish is time to put it in writing. “Dressed in your Sunday best" is a great phrase that harkens back to a time when people made a point of putting on their nicest clothes for attending church on Sunday. Contemporary culture is far more casual, and that is fine, but… is that appropriate for the Holy Mass? In San Antonio the temperatures have risen, and so we dress accordingly, right? Shorts, sleeveless tops, whatever keeps us cool. Again, that is fine, but… wait a minute! It’s Sunday morning and time to prepare for Mass. Whether we consciously think of it or not, this will be the most important event of the week, and certainly worth a bit of “fuss” when it comes to choosing what to wear. Think about it—the angels hide their face before His Majesty—and what have we just pulled off the hanger? If we’re dressed for a backyard barbecue, we need to back up and try again! So, what is appropriate Mass attire? Assisting at Mass is not about greeting your friends and neighbors; it is about greeting the King of kings, the Lord of lords, as He is present in the Eucharist. Let three words guide your clothing selection: neat, clean, and modest. Dear brother and sister, forgive me being so specific: out of respect for the Eucharist women should not wear plunging necklines, spaghetti straps or strapless tops, nor should they display bare midriffs. Extremely short skirts or shorts, or tight pants are also inappropriate. Any clothing that calls attention to the wearer and away from the Mass is disrespectful. We must pause a moment and think: “what event I am attending, a formal and important one, or informal and unimportant one? Clothing for Mass does not need to be expensive or elaborate. However, the care with which we dress reflects the care with which we pray. As simple as this. Most people take great pains to show up for a job interview or a party in appropriate clothing. It is only reasonable that we make the same effort to be suitably dressed at Mass to meet Our Lord. At the end of the day, attending Mass is a question of love, could we put a little more love to prepare internally and externally, to attend Mass? ■ Fr. Agustin, pastor.

¿Para quién guardamos lo mejor que tenemos?

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, hay un tema importante que está directamente relacionado con la celebración de la Eucaristía, y ahora que ya voy a dejar la parroquia para ir a trabajar en otro lugar que el arzobispo me ha asignado quiero ponerlo por escrito en nuestro Pastor’s Bench. La forma en que vestimos refleja cuánto respetamos al anfitrión y la dignidad del evento. Es por eso, por ejemplo, que nos presentamos bien vestidos a una entrevista de trabajo, a una boda o un funeral. Si los católicos comprendiésemos mucho mejor el significado sublime de la Santa Misa, deberíamos manifestar el mayor respeto en la forma en que nos vestimos. Ciertamente no debemos juzgar a una persona con vestido sucio pues es posible que haya salido del trabajo y es su única oportunidad de asistir a misa, o que venga a la celebración con grandes problemas personales y no está pensando en su forma de vestir, etc., hay muchas razones y no debemos juzgar; es importante que extendamos una bienvenida llena de amor a todos. Sin embargo debemos juzgarnos a nosotros mismos y sobre todo bebemos recordar que somos unidad de cuerpo y alma, es decir, todo nuestro ser debe prepararse para la gran celebración que es la santa Misa, en especial la Misa del Domingo. Todo lo visible nos ayuda de una forma y otra a elevarnos y a conectarnos con  Dios que es invisible: nos ayuda la arquitectura y la decoración, la música, los ornamentos del sacerdote, etc. todo, debe manifestar la sublime importancia de la Santa Misa. Aun si somos pobres, llevemos lo mejor que tenemos. Lo importante es la actitud que representan nuestros actos. Si no vestimos la mejor ropa para la Santa Misa, ¿para quien la reservamos? Por eso playeras demasiado cortas, escotes muy pronunciados y, desde luego shorts y chanclas no son lo más apropiado para asistir a la celebración de la Misa. Están muy bien para la playa o un día de campo junto al río Guadalupe, pero no pasar venir a la parroquia a la santa Misa. Yo les pido que pongamos un poquito de atención y un mucho de amor. Al final de todo la celebración de la Eucaristía es eso: una cuestión de amor. Es el Amor mismo el que nos llama para bendecirnos y estar con Él ■ P. Agustín, párroco

May, the month of our Blessed Mother

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee,

Pray. Sing. Reflect. Be grateful...

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, there is a topic I've been thinking for some time and today I want to comment briefly on our Pastor's Bench. Have you ever felt the need to leave Mass early for whatever reason? Maybe you are running late for a brunch with friends or you have a ballgame to attend. Have you ever thought that if the situation were different, you might not be so inclined to step out before the final blessing? What if it was dinner at your CEO’s house or you were on a date with somebody you cared for very deeply? Would you walk out early on those people? Leaving before the final blessing or last hymn is largely a Catholic phenomenon. This early exodus is rarely seen in Protestant services or even those in Mormon Tabernacles and Jehovah’s Witness halls. Is our behavior indicative of faithful Catholics or of those of us who simply feel that there are more important things we can be doing with our time? God must be first in our lives –everything else is secondary! Why many of our parishioners left the church long before the priest, with the other ministers, leaves the sanctuary and walk to the sacristy? I think we should give more importance to the celebration of the Eucharist. The entire celebration of the Mass is important, from the introductory rites to the recessional procession. In the same way that we do not leave a dinner or any meal without saying thanks and goodbye, in that same way is good to remain a few minutes at the end of the Eucharist giving thanks to the Lord. It is also a sign of good manners and courtesy to the ministers who help us with the music ministry; it's a shame that sometimes only the music director and choir are signing the recessional hymn! My brother, my sister, perhaps its time now to break old habits and stay until mass is over, just decide to do it. Stay to the end and say thank you. Pray. Sing. Reflect. Be grateful for the opportunity to spend such a precious time in God's presence in His house, after just having received the Body and Blood of His Son! Is there anywhere else or anything else that can compare? What could possibly be more important? If you don't make a change in your life now and train yourself to stay for the entirety of mass, then when will you? Take good care now about your spiritual well being. ...Podríamos quedarnos unos minutos más...

Queridos hermanos en el Señor,  hay  un tema en el que he estado pensando durante algún tiempo y hoy quiero comentarlo brevemente Muchas veces me pregunto por qué tenemos la (mala) costumbre de salir de la parroquia antes de que el sacerdote y los ministros abandonen por completo el altar.  Aunque –dice mi mamá- “las comparaciones son odiosas”, esta mala costumbre rara vez se ve en otras denominaciones, como por ejemplo en los servicios de nuestros hermanos protestantes, en los templos Mormones o en los salones de los testigos de Jehová. ¿Será que los católicos tenemos cosas más importantes qué hacer? Pienso que hemos de dar más peso y más importancia a la celebración de la Eucaristía; asistir con mucha más reverencia, y atención; prepararnos mejor, especialmente la Eucaristía dominical que es el centro de toda la semana. Toda la celebración de la Misa es importante, desde los ritos de entrada (el saludo, el Señor ten piedad, el Gloria, etc.) hasta a la procesión salida. De la misma manera que no nos vamos de una comida o de una cena a la que fuimos invitados sin decir adiós y gracias al anfitrión, de esa misma manera es bueno permanecer unos pocos minutos al final para dar gracias al Jesús por todo lo que nos regaló, que es mucho. El quedarse un momento es también un signo de los buenos modales y cortesía hacia los ministros que nos ayudan con la música de la celebración. Queridos hermanos, en éste sexto domingo del tiempo de Pascua, tomemos la decisión de romper con los viejos hábitos, tomemos la decisión de quedarnos hasta el final de la misa y quizá unos pocos minutos más orando, cantando, reflexionando; agradeciendo el tiempo precioso que pudimos pasar en la presencia de Dios, en su casa, ¿hay alguna otra cosa más importante que la celebración de la Eucaristía? ¿Qué puede ser más importante? Como decía hace poco nuestro querido papa emérito Benedicto XVI: “en la Eucaristía nace y se renueva la capacidad de compartir tanto la vida como los bienes materiales, cargar los pesos de los demás, así como de ser hospitalarios y acogedores”. Pidamos a la Santísima Virgen su ayuda (¡comenzamos el mes de Mayo) para tener una mejor actitud –más llena de amor- hacia la celebración de la Santa Misa ■ P. Agustín, párroco.
