Resumig our sesssion on the Second Vatican Council documents

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, during the months of March and April in our community were focused on the celebration of Lent in preparation for the Holy, the most important days of the year, a season when we celebrate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord. Once we have celebrated the Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord –Easter Sunday- we return many things that we, say, "paused" before Ash Wednesday, one of which is the important celebration of the Year of Faith. A few days after his election, Pope Francis at the meeting with representatives of the Churches and Ecclesial Communities and other religions, he said: "[...] I begin my apostolic ministry during this year that my venerable predecessor, Benedict XVI with truly inspired intuition, has proclaimed the Catholic Church Year of Faith with this initiative, we want to continue, and hopefully encourage the journey of faith of all, I wanted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, proposing a pilgrimage to what is essential for every Christian: personal and transforming relationship with Jesus Christ, Son of God, died and rose for our salvation. At the heart of the Council's message is precisely the desire to proclaim this treasure perennially valid faith to the people of our time. [...]". At this point one may ask, "Is not all this too far? Is not this celebration only happening in Rome and where the cardinals and bishops of the Church live?” My brother, my sister, the Year of Faith is available to everyone, and even though the virtue of faith is a gift of God to every person -and therefore it is something free- is in our hands rekindle and reshape our faith. On Sunday May 5, at 5PM in the parish center, we will resume the study sessions in the documents of Vatican II and so continue that Holy Father's invitation to deepen our faith and witness of our hope. We have to remember that every baptized Catholic is called through baptism to be a disciple of Christ and proclaim the Gospel. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for each and every Catholic to renew their baptismal call by living out the everyday moments of their lives with faith, hope and love. This everyday witness is necessary for proclaiming the Gospel to family, friends, neighbors and society. In order to witness to the Gospel, Catholics must be strengthened through celebrating weekly Sunday Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Let us walk together and praying together uniting our hearts to the intentions of the Holy Father and the Archbishop of San Antonio ■ Fr. Agustin, pastor. 

Seguimos caminando en el Año de la Fe

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, durante los meses de Marzo y Abril en nuestra comunidad estuvimos enfocados en la celebración de la Cuaresma como preparación para la Semana Santa, los días más importantes del año y en los que se celebran la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección del Señor. Una vez que hemos celebrado la Pascua, retomamos muchas cosas que dejamos, digamos, “en pausa” antes del Miércoles de Ceniza, una de ellas es la importante celebración del Año de la Fe, convocado por el Papa emérito Benedicto XVI el año pasado y continuado por su sucesor nuestro querido padre el Papa Francisco. Pocos días después de su elección, el Papa en la reunión con los representantes de las Iglesias y comunidades eclesiales, y de otras religiones, les decía:  "[...] Comienzo mi ministerio apostólico durante este año que mi venerado predecesor, Benedicto XVI, con intuición verdaderamente inspirada, ha proclamado para la Iglesia católica Año de la Fe. Con esta iniciativa, que deseo continuar, y que espero que impulse el camino de fe de todos, quería conmemorar el 50 aniversario del inicio del Concilio Vaticano II, proponiendo una especie de peregrinación a lo que es esencial para todo cristiano: la relación personal y transformadora con Jesucristo, Hijo de Dios, muerto y resucitado por nuestra salvación. En el corazón del mensaje conciliar reside precisamente el deseo de proclamar este tesoro perennemente válido de la fe a los hombres de nuestro tiempo.[...]"[1]. Llegados a éste punto uno puede preguntarse “¿No es demasiado lejano todo esto del Año de la Fe? ¿No es algo que solamente se vive en Roma o allá donde están los cardenales y los obispos de la Iglesia?” No. El Año de la Fe está al alcance de todos, y aunque ciertamente la fe es un regalo de Dios a cada persona –y por lo tanto algo gratuito-, sí que está en nuestras manos reavivar ésa fe. Hay diez maneras muy prácticas y muy sencillas de que esa fe se fortalezca en nuestros hogares, en nuestra comunidad parroquial: 1) participar en la Santa Misa algún día además del domingo; 2) acudir a la Confesión, 3) conocer más a los santos, 4) leer la Sagrada Escritura cinco minutos todos los días, comenzando por los evangelios, 4) conocer los documentos del Concilio Vaticano II, 5) estudiar el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, 6) echar la mano en algún apostolado de la parroquia, 7) visitar a algún enfermo 8) invitar a Misa a los amigos, 9) tratar de vivir las Bienaventuranzas 10) sentir un sano y profundo orgullo por pertenecer a la Iglesia Católica. Con éstas breves ideas en mente, que Dios nos ayude a seguir nuestro camino en el Año de la Fe ■ P. Agustín, párroco.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the Holy Scripture says that there is a time a time to every purpose under the sun: A time pair born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to boot I planted, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to mourn and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to throw stones and a time to gather. Well, me now it's time to obey the voice of my Archbishop who asked my presence and work in another pastoral assignment, so beginning on the first day of July of 2013, St. Vincent de Paul, our beloved parish community, will have another pastor, and no doubt he will be a very good one with the right skills, attitude and love to guide our beloved community. Today, to make official this announcement, I would like to borrow the attitude and words of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI in the following days of the announcement of his departure: «Dear friends! God guides his Church; he sustains it always, especially at times of difficulty. Let us never lose this vision of faith, which is the one true way of looking at the journey of the Church and of the world. In our hearts, in the heart of each of you, may there always abide the joyful certainty that the Lord is at our side: he does not abandon us, he remains close to us and he surrounds us with his love. Thank you!». After much thought, I decided to give you this news in our Pastor’s Bench, and not during the celebration of the Eucharist because I have the firm conviction that the Holy Mass belongs to the Lord, indeed the Holy Mass is for the Lord and only for Him ("The Mass is about Jesus, not about me," the idea is from Cardinal Dolan, and I loved it from the moment I heard it for the first time). With these simple lines I want to say goodbye to each one of you and tell you that I will always carry St. Vincent de Paul in my heart because it was in this parish that I learned how to be a pastor, while I received much love and support. The priest who is leaving is not important, the priest who will come is not important, important is our Lord Jesus Christ who lives forever and gives meaning and life to all things, to Him all the honor and glory for ever and ever ■ Fr. ¡Hasta siempre, querida parroquia!

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, nos enseña la Sagrada Escritura que hay un tiempo para cada cosa: un tiempo para todo y un tiempo para cada cosa bajo el sol: Un tiempo par nacer y un tiempo para morir, un tiempo para plantar y un tiempo para arrancar lo plantado; un tiempo para matar y un tiempo para curar, un tiempo para demoler y un tiempo para edificar; un tiempo para llorar y un tiempo para reír, un tiempo para lamentarse y un tiempo para bailar; un tiempo para arrojar piedras y un tiempo para recogerlas. Para un servidor, llega el momento de obedecer la voz del Arzobispo que me pide mi presencia y mi trabajo en otro encargo pastoral.  A partir del primero de Julio de éste año, St. Vincent de Paul, nuestra querida parroquia, tendrá otro párroco, y sin duda alguna será uno muy bueno y sabrá guiar y querer a la comunidad parroquial. Hoy, al hacer oficial el anuncio de éste cambio, tomo prestadas la actitud y las palabras de su Santidad el Papa emérito Benedicto XVI en los días posteriores al anuncio de su marcha: «Queridos amigos, Dios guía a su Iglesia, la sostiene siempre, también y sobre todo en los momentos difíciles. No perdamos nunca esta visión de fe, que es la única visión verdadera del camino de la Iglesia y del mundo. Que en nuestro corazón, en el corazón de cada uno de vosotros, esté siempre la gozosa certeza de que el Señor está a nuestro lado, no nos abandona, está cerca de nosotros y nos cubre con su amor». Después de pensarlo mucho, he decidido dar ésta noticia por escrito, y no durante la celebración de la Eucaristía pues tengo la firme convicción de que la Misa es del Señor y para el Señor (“The Mass is about Jesus, not about me”, la idea es del Cardenal Dolan, y me gustó mucho desde el momento en el que la escuché por primera vez). Con éstas sencillas líneas quiero despedirme de cada uno de ustedes y decirles que siempre llevaré a St. Vincent de Paul Catholic en mi corazón porque fue en ésta comunidad parroquial donde aprendí a ser párroco, mientras recibí mucho cariño y mucho apoyo. El sacerdote que se va no es importante, el sacerdote que llega tampoco es importante, importante es el Señor que permanece para siempre y que da sentido y vida a todo, a Él todo el honor y toda la gloria por los siglos de los siglos. Amen ■

Unamos nuestros corazones al corazón de nuestro Arzobispo y, juntos, pueblo y pastor, vamos a esperar la venida del Espíritu Santo. 

Third Sunday of Easter in Ordinary Time

My brothers and sisters in the Lord, in one of his last homilies our holy Father Pope Francis reflected on the Gospel passage that recounts the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus, who did not immediately grasp how a man can be born again[1]. However, Pope Francis added, that it is a life that has to be developed, it does not come automatically: we have to do all we can to ensure that our life develops into new life, which may be a laborious journey but one that depends chiefly on the Holy Spirit as well as our ability to be open to his breath. And this, the Pope pointed out, is exactly what happened to the early Christians. They had new life”, which was expressed in their living with one heart and one soul. They had, he said, that unity, that unanimity, that harmony of feeling of love, mutual love… A dimension that needs to be rediscovered. He noted that today, for example, the aspect of meekness in the community, is a somewhat forgotten virtue. Meekness is stigmatized; it has many enemies, the first of which is gossip. Our Holy Father further developed this reflection: «When we prefer to gossip, gossip about others, criticize others- these are everyday things that happen to everyone, including me – these are the temptations of the evil one who does not want the Spirit to come to us and bring about peace and meekness in the Christian community. These struggles always exist in the parish, in the family, in the neighborhood, among friends. Instead through the Spirit we are born into a new life, he makes us meek, charitable. The correct behavior for a Christian, first, is do not judge anyone because the only Judge is the Lord. Then we must keep quiet, and if you have something to say, say it to the interested parties, to those who can remedy the situation, but not to the entire neighborhood. If, by the grace of the Holy Spirit we succeed in never gossiping, it will be a great step forward and will do us all good». God grant that these ideas of our Holy Father Pope Francis really to help us reflect for a moment and may we take the decision to live charity so far, as the first apostles, whose life we are hearing these days on the beautiful readings from the Acts of the apostles ■ Fr. Pascua y Misericordia

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, el día que el Papa tomó posesión de la cátedra del obispo de Roma (San Juan de Letrán) en su homilía habló de algo que considero importante y que puede ayudarnos en nuestra vida espiritual: el constante regreso al Padre y a su misericordia. Las palabras del Papa son de una gran claridad, por eso no hace falta más presentación: «La paciencia de Dios debe encontrar en nosotros la valentía de volver a Él, sea cual sea el error, sea cual sea el pecado que haya en nuestra vida (…) Es precisamente en las heridas de Jesús que nosotros estamos seguros, ahí se manifiesta el amor inmenso de su corazón. Esto es importante: la valentía de confiarme a la misericordia de Jesús, de confiar en su paciencia, de refugiarme siempre en las heridas de su amor. San Bernardo llega a afirmar: «Y, aunque tengo conciencia de mis muchos pecados, si creció el pecado, más desbordante fue la gracia[1]. Tal vez alguno de nosotros puede pensar: mi pecado es tan grande, mi lejanía de Dios es como la del hijo menor de la parábola, mi incredulidad es como la de Tomás; no tengo las agallas para volver, para pensar que Dios pueda acogerme y que me esté esperando precisamente a mí. Pero Dios te espera precisamente a ti, te pide sólo el valor de regresar a Él. Cuántas veces en mi ministerio pastoral me han repetido: «Padre, tengo muchos pecados»; y la invitación que he hecho siempre es: «No temas, ve con Él, te está esperando, Él hará todo». Cuántas propuestas mundanas sentimos a nuestro alrededor. Dejémonos sin embargo aferrar por la propuesta de Dios, la suya es una caricia de amor. Para Dios no somos números, somos importantes, es más somos lo más importante que tiene; aun siendo pecadores, somos lo que más le importa». Que encontremos un poco de tiempo para reflexionar en esto, para darnos cuenta del inmenso amor que el Padre nos tiene y que confiemos en Él siempre. Es ahí, en la confianza en su amor y su infinita y cariñosa paciencia donde está el fundamento de nuestra espiritualidad, donde encontramos la alegría necesaria para seguir viviendo, como decimos al rezar la Salve a la Virgen, en éste valle de lágrimas ■ P. Praise be God!

Después de la celebración de la Resurrección del Señor, lo que más nos trajo alegría en el Domingo de Pascua fue la participación de Alfredo como lector. Alfredo tiene 26 años y tiene un impedimento visual, pero aún así él quiso ser lector en nuestra comunidad. Él preparo en método Braile las lecturas el día, y él las leyó muy bien durante la Liturgia de la Palabra. Hoy le damos gracias a Dios porque él sigue suscitado en nuestra comunidad servidores de la Palabra! ■ P. Agustin, párroco.

After the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord, which brought more joy to our community on Easter Sunday was Alfredo's participation as a lector. Alfredo is 26 years old, he is visually impaired but still he wanted to be a lector in our parish community; he prepared in Braille method the readings of the day, and he read very well indeed. Today we give thanks to God because he is raised in our community servants of the Word! ■ Fr. Agustin, pastor.

The Pope's voice on Easter Sunday of 2013

The Pope's voice is important, his voice is the voice of the shepherd who walks with the flock of Christ. During the coming weeks I would like to share with you some texts of our Holy Father Francis. These are short texts but with great force. The text of this Sunday is his greeting for the people at St. Peter's Square gathered there to receive the blessing Urbi et Orbe on Easter Sunday. «Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter to you all! Thank you for coming today, in such large numbers, to share the joy of Easter, the central mystery of our faith. Let us pray that the power of the resurrection of Christ might reach everyone – especially those who suffer – and every place that is in need of trust and hope. Christ has conquered evil fully and finally, but it is up to us, to people in every age, to embrace this victory in our lives and in the realities of history and society. For this reason it seems important to point out that today we ask God in the liturgy: “O God, who give constant increase to your Church by new offspring, grant that your servants may hold fast in their lives to the Sacrament they have received in faith.” (Collect for Monday in the Octave of Easter). Indeed, the Baptism that makes us children of God, and the Eucharist that unites us to Christ, must become life. That is to say: they must be reflected in attitudes, behaviors, actions and choices. The grace contained in the Sacraments of Easter is an enormous source of strength for renewal in personal and family life, as well as for social relations. Nevertheless, everything passes through the human heart: if I allow myself to be reached by the grace of the risen Christ, if I let that grace change for the better whatever is not good in me, [to change whatever] might do harm to me and to others, then I allow the victory of Christ to affirm itself in my life, to broaden its beneficial action. This is the power of grace! Without grace we can do nothing – without grace we can do nothing! And with the grace of Baptism and Holy Communion can become an instrument of God’s mercy – that beautiful mercy of God. To express in our lives the sacrament we have received: behold, dear brothers and sisters, our daily work – and, I would say, our daily joy! The joy of being instruments of the grace of Christ, as branches of the vine which is Christ himself, inspired by the sustaining presence of His Spirit! We pray together, in the name of the dead and risen Lord, and through the intercession of Mary Most Holy, that the Paschal mystery might work deeply in us and in our time, in order that hatred give way to love, lies to the truth, revenge to forgiveness, sadness to joy…».

Te rogamos, Señor, que este cirio,

consagrado a tu nombre,

para destruir la oscuridad de esta noche,

arda sin apagarse

y, aceptado como perfume,

se asocie a las lumbreras del cielo.

La voz del Papa Francisco en la mañana de Pascua

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, La voz del Papa es importante. La voz del Papa es la voz del pastor que camina junto al rebaño de Cristo. Durante las próximas semanas me gustaría compartir contigo algunos textos del Papa Francisco; estos son textos breves pero con mucha fuerza. El texto del reverso (inglés) es el saludo de él a la gente que estaba en la plaza de san Pedro para recibir la bendición Urbi et Orbe; el que copio a continuación es el de la segunda  Audiencia general y la primera de sus catequesis del Año de la Fe.

«(…) En las profesiones de fe del Nuevo Testamento, como testigos de la Resurrección se recuerda solo a los hombres, a los Apóstoles, pero no a las mujeres. Esto se debe a que, de acuerdo con la ley judía de la época, las mujeres y los niños no podían dar un testimonio fiable, creíble. En los evangelios, sin embargo, las mujeres tienen un papel primordial, fundamental. Aquí podemos ver un elemento a favor de la historicidad de la resurrección: si se tratara de un hecho inventado, en el contexto de aquel tiempo, no hubiera estado ligado al testimonio de las mujeres. Los evangelistas sin embargo, narran simplemente lo que sucedió: las mujeres son las primeras testigos. Esto nos dice que Dios no escoge según los criterios humanos: los primeros testigos del nacimiento de Jesús son los pastores, gente sencilla y humilde; los primeros testigos de la resurrección son las mujeres. Y esto es hermoso. ¡Y esto es un poco la misión de las madres, de las mujeres! Dar testimonio a sus hijos, a sus nietos, que Jesús está vivo, que es la vida, que resucitó. ¡Mamás y mujeres, adelante con este testimonio! Para Dios cuenta el corazón, el cuánto estamos abiertos a Él, si acaso somos como niños que se confían (…)He visto que hay muchos jóvenes en la plaza. A ustedes les digo: lleven esta certeza: el Señor está vivo y camina con nosotros en la vida. ¡Esta es su misión! Lleven adelante esta esperanza: este ancla que está en los cielos; mantengan fuerte la cuerda, manténganse anclados y lleven la esperanza. Ustedes, testigos de Jesús, den testimonio de que Jesús está vivo y esto nos dará esperanza, dará esperanza a este mundo un poco envejecido por las guerras, por el mal, por el pecado. ¡Adelante, jóvenes!»
