A quick look at Youth Day with Pope Benedict XVI

Dear brothers and sisters, today I would like to return briefly in mind and heart to the extraordinary days spent in Madrid for the XXVI World Youth Day. It was, as you know, a moving ecclesial event: approximately 2 million youth from every continent gathered for a truly exceptional experience of fraternity, of encounter with the Lord, of sharing and of growth in the faith: a true cascade of light. I thank God for this precious gift, which gives hope for the future of the Church: young people with the unwavering and sincere desire to root their lives in Christ, to remain firm in the faith, and to walk together with the Church. A thanks to all those who worked so generously for this Day: the cardinal archbishop of Madrid, his auxiliaries, the other bishops of Spain and of other parts of the world, the Pontifical Council for the Laity, priests, men and women religious and lay faithful. I renew my gratitude to the Spanish authorities, to the institutions and associations, to the volunteers and to all those who offered the support of their prayer. Nor can I forget the warm welcome I received from their majesties the king and queen of Spain, as well as from the entire country. Naturally I cannot describe in only a few words the intense moments we experienced. I have in mind the uncontainable enthusiasm with which the young people welcomed me the first day at Plaza de Cibeles, their words so rich in expectations; their strong desire to turn to the most profound truth and to root themselves in it -- that truth that God has given us to know in Christ.

In the imposing Monastery of El Escorial -- so rich in history, spirituality and culture -- I met with young women religious and young university professors. I reminded the former -- the young women religious -- of the beauty of their vocation lived with fidelity, and the importance of their apostolic service and their prophetic witness. And within me there remains the impression of their enthusiasm, of a youthful faith, full of courage for the future and of a willingness to serve mankind. I reminded professors to be true educators of the new generations by guiding them in the search for truth -- not only by their words but also by their lives -- aware that the Truth is Christ Himself. In encountering Christ, we encounter the truth. That evening, in the celebration of the Way of the Cross, a variegated multitude of young people relived with great intensity the scenes of the passion and death of Christ: the cross of Christ gives much more than it demands -- it gives all, because it leads us to God. The following day, the Holy Mass [was celebrated] in the Cathedral of Almudena, Madrid, with seminarians: young men who want to root themselves in Christ in order to make Him present one day as His ministers. I hope that vocations to the priesthood increase! Among those present, there was more than one who had heard the call of the Lord at a former World Youth Day. I am certain that -- also in Madrid -- the Lord knocked at the door of the hearts of many young men, [calling them] to follow Him generously in priestly ministry or in religious life.The visit to a center for disabled youth allowed me to see the great respect and love that is fostered toward each person, and it provided me the occasion to thank the thousands of volunteers who silently witness to the Gospel of charity and of life.

The evening Prayer Vigil and the great concluding Eucharistic Celebration the day after were two very intense moments: In the evening a great multitude of young people full of joy – and not at all intimidated by the rain and wind -- remained in silent adoration of Christ present in the Eucharist, to praise Him, to thank Him, to ask of Him help and light; and then on Sunday, the young people showed their exuberance and joy in celebrating the Lord in Word and Eucharist, in order that they might enter ever more deeply into Him and strengthen their faith and Christian life.

In a climate of enthusiasm, lastly I met with volunteers, whom I thanked for their generosity, and with the farewell ceremony I left the country carrying these days in my heart as a great gift. Dear friends, the meeting in Madrid was, first and foremost, a marvelous demonstration of faith -- for Spain and for the world. For the multitude of young people who had come from every corner of the world, it was a special occasion to reflect, discuss, exchange positive experiences and, above all, to pray together and to renew their commitment to root their own lives in Christ, the Faithful Friend. I am sure that they have returned home, and that they return there with the firm purpose of being a leaven in society by carrying the hope that is born of faith. For my part, I continue to accompany them in prayer, so that they might remain faithful to the commitments they have assumed. I entrust the fruits of this Day to the maternal intercession of Mary ■ Benedicto XVI 

  

Ecos de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud 2011

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, hoy quisiera volver brevemente con el pensamiento y con el corazón a los extraordinarios días transcurridos en Madrid para la XXVI Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Ha sido un evento eclesial emocionante, cerca de dos millones de jóvenes de todos los Continentes han vivido, con alegría, una formidable experiencia de fraternidad, de encuentro con el Señor, de compartir y de crecimiento en la fe: una verdadera cascada de luz. Doy gracias a Dios por este don precioso, que da esperanza para el futuro de la Iglesia: jóvenes con el deseo firme y sincero de enraizar su vida en Cristo, permanecer firmes en la fe, caminar juntos en la Iglesia. Un gracias a cuantos han trabajado generosamente por esta Jornada: al Cardenal Arzobispo de Madrid, a sus Auxiliares, a los demás Obispos de España y de las otras partes del mundo, al Pontificio Consejo para los Laicos, sacerdotes, religiosos y religiosas, laicos. Renuevo mi reconocimiento a las Autoridades españolas, a las instituciones, a los voluntarios y a cuantos han ofrecido el apoyo de la oración. No puedo olvidar la calurosa acogida que he recibido de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España, así como de todo el País.

En pocas palabras no puedo describir los momentos tan intensos que hemos vivido. Tengo en la mente el entusiasmo incontenible con el que los jóvenes me han recibido, el primer día, en la Plaza de Cibeles, sus palabras ricas de esperanza, su fuerte deseo de orientarse a la verdad más profunda y enraizarse en ella, aquella verdad que Dios nos ha dado a conocer en Cristo. En el imponente Monasterio de El Escorial, rico de historia, de espiritualidad y de cultura, he encontrado a las jóvenes religiosas y a los jóvenes docentes universitarios. A las primeras he recordado la belleza de su vocación vivida con fidelidad, y la importancia de su servicio apostólico y de su testimonio profético. A los profesores he recordado ser verdaderos formadores de las nuevas generaciones, guiándolas en la búsqueda de la verdad no solamente con las palabras, sino también con la vida, conscientes que la Verdad es Cristo mismo. Por la tarde, en la celebración del Vía Crucis, una multitud variada de jóvenes ha revivido con intensa participación las escenas de la pasión y muerte de Cristo: la cruz de Cristo da mucho más de aquello que exige, lo da todo, porque nos conduce a Dios.

Al día siguiente, la Santa Misa en la Catedral de la Almudena, en Madrid, con los seminaristas: jóvenes que quieren enraizarse en Cristo para hacerlo presente un mañana, como ministros suyos. ¡Deseo que crezcan las vocaciones al sacerdocio! Entre los presentes había más de uno que había oído la llamada del Señor precisamente en las precedentes Jornadas Mundiales; estoy seguro que también en Madrid el Señor ha llamado a la puerta del corazón de muchos jóvenes para que le sigan con generosidad en el ministerio sacerdotal o en el de la vida religiosa.

La visita a un Centro para jóvenes discapacitados me hizo ver el gran respeto y amor que se nutre hacia toda persona y me dio la ocasión de agradecer a los miles de voluntarios, que testimonian silenciosamente el Evangelio de la caridad y de la vida. La Vigilia de oración de la tarde y la gran Celebración eucarística conclusiva del día siguiente fueron dos momentos muy intensos: en la tarde una multitud de jóvenes en fiesta, para nada atemorizados por la lluvia y por el viento, permaneció en adoración silenciosa de Cristo presente en la Eucaristía, para alabarlo, en acción de gracias, rogando su ayuda y luz. Luego, el domingo, los jóvenes manifestaron su exuberante alegría, celebrando al Señor en la Palabra y en la Eucaristía, para insertarse cada vez más en Él y reforzar su fe y vida cristiana. En un clima de entusiasmo, mantuve un encuentro con los voluntarios, agradeciéndoles su generosidad y con la ceremonia de despedida dejé el país, llevando en mi corazón estos días.

Queridos amigos, el encuentro de Madrid fue una estupenda manifestación de fe para España y para el mundo. Para la multitud de jóvenes, provenientes de todos los rincones de la tierra, fue una ocasión especial para reflexionar, dialogar, intercambiar experiencias positivas y, sobre todo, rezar juntos y renovar su compromiso de arraigar su propia vida en Cristo, Amigo fiel. Estoy seguro de que han regresado a sus hogares con el firme propósito de ser levadura en la masa, llevando la esperanza que nace de la fe. De mi parte, sigo acompañándolos con la oración, para que permanezcan fieles a los compromisos asumidos. A la maternal intercesión de María, encomiendo los frutos de esta Jornada ■ Benedicto XVI 

Welcome, Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy!

My brothers and sisters in Christ, as it is important for you to know what is happening in our parish, I would like to formally present to you the Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy.  This new ministry has emerged in our community in order to give parishioners an increased opportunity to visit and adore the Blessed Sacrament.  It's aim is to allow its members to grow in Spirituality.  Christian Spirituality is a way of living out our faith in imitation of Christ as the highest ideal and in imitation of his Saints who incarnated the spirit of Christ in their own culture and time.   The life of Saint Faustina (canonized on April 30, 2000) and the spirituality that Jesus gives to benefit the entire world can be very useful for us today.

On Mondays, beginning August 22, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., the Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy will begin their lessons in Spanish. The English version of the Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy will meet on Fridays, beginning on August 26, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.  These weekly cenacles will include a Communion Service and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. I invite you, therefore, to join this ministry to the extent that your time and your work permit. The two Communion Services accompanying these Apostles (Monday evening and Friday evening) are designed for those who work and can not join us in celebrating the Eucharist in the morning, but all are welcome.

May God bless this initiative and give us a great love for Jesus's Mercy and Eucharistic presence.

¡Un nuevo ministerio, un nuevo apostolado!

Queridos hermanos en el Señor, es importante saber qué está sucediendo en nuestra parroquia y qué nuevos ministerios e iniciativas van poco a poco surgiendo en nuestra comunidad. Con estas líneas quiero presentar formalmente el ministerio de los Apóstoles Eucarísticos de la Divina Misericordia. A partir del Lunes, 22 de agosto a las 7:00 PM nuestra parroquia empezará la formación de los Apóstoles Eucarísticos de la Divina Misericordia en español. Los viernes, a partir del 26 de agosto a las 7:00 PM, tendremos la versión en Inglés. Ambos cenáculos, que serán semanales, incluirán una liturgia de la Palabra con la distribución de la Sagrada Comunión y la exposición del Santísimo Sacramento.

Este nuevo ministerio dará a nuestros feligreses la oportunidad de visitar y adorar el Santísimo Sacramento de lunes a viernes en diferentes momentos para que así podamos crecer en espiritualidad, imitando a los santos en quienes que encarnó el espíritu de Cristo. La vida de Santa Faustina Kowalska, canonizada el 30 de abril del 2000, y la espiritualidad que Jesús le reveló en beneficio de todo el mundo puede ser muy útil para nosotros hoy.

Los invito, pues a unirse a estos ministerios en la medida en que su tiempo y trabajo lo permitan. Los dos servicios de comunión que acompañarán a estos ministerios (lunes y viernes por la tarde) están pensados para aquellos que trabajan y no pueden unirse a nosotros en la mañana en la celebración de la Eucaristía. Que Dios bendiga estas iniciativas y nos ayuden a crecer en amor la divina misericordia de Jesús y Su presencia eucarística.

Deacon Oscar Tello ordained at San Fernando Cathedral.

A glorious feast of the Assumption, that began with the installation of Father Jeff Pehl as new rector of Assumption Seminary, came to a joyous conclusion with the ordination of Oscar Tello as a transitional deacon by Archibishop Gustavo. Family, friends, priests, and brother seminarians joined in this celebration as Deacon Tello took one step closer to the priesthood.

Gracias a Dios tenemos un nuevo diácono en nuestra querida Arquidiócesos. Elevemos a Dios una oración en acción de gracias por la ordenación de Oscar Tello y pidamos al Señor que envíe más trabajadores a su mies!

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Meditating on the Assumption pushes my brain to its limit – I know the joy in Heaven must have been indescribable but I simply cannot fathom what it was like for Our Lady to first behold the beatific vision. To meet the Father for the first time. To see her Divine Son again, in all of His heavenly majesty. To fully understand her role in the salvation of its world. To see St. Joseph ; that the two of them might wonder in all of their humility and obedience the greatness of God that He bestowed upon them such extraordinary dignity. To have choirs of angels welcoming Our Lady into Paradise. *sigh* Oh, to have been a mouse in the corner. What a glorious day it must have been! But it was when I learned the Franciscan Crown Rosary, a prayer celebrating the joys of Our Lady, that I found something else to ponder about the Assumption. According to one Franciscan Order, the Blessed Virgin Mary was seventy-two years old when she was assumed into Heaven. Estimating that she was fourteen when she gave birth to Jesus, she would have been forty-seven when He died. That leaves twenty-five years for her on Earth without her beloved Son. Despite her joy in His victory, the Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven, it must have been incredibly painful for her to be separated from Him. Certainly she had the company of some of the Apostles, and friends. I am sure she knew that she would see her Divine Son again one day, but we humans often need a tangible presence for comfort. I would assume that Our Lady may have been given special consolation at times, visits from her Son or the holy angels. But maybe not. Maybe her solitary presence on Earth was part of a bigger plan. Because she was given twenty-five years to further contemplate the mysteries of God, Our Lady must have prayed often for the salvation of her Son’s beloved children. She knew what was in store for the faithful, and she knew the desolation that befell those who rejected God. And one tear from the spotless, sinless Virgin means more in Heaven than we can possibly imagine. How often did Our Lady plead lovingly through tears with the Father for mankind, many of whom she saw living sinful lives, oblivious or indifferent to her Son who sacrificed all while she, the Mother of God, remained, sinless, on Earth? Perhaps those twenty-five years she spent on Earth were yet another facet of her martyrdom. She undoubtedly offered her own agony to the Father as she watched her Son suffer on the Cross. Did she offer the sorrow of being separated from her Son to the Father for the sake of mankind? I suspect so. And such an offering from the humble Virgin would have made her Assumption into Heaven all the more glorious. Thank you so much to Our Lord and Our Lady for this beautiful Feast Day ■

En lecho de manzanas olorosas

La Asunción de la santísima Virgen María

Apareció una figura portentosa en el cielo: una mujer vestida del sol, la luna por pedestal, coronada con doce estrellas (Ap 11,19). Maravillado y transido de belleza canta el poeta: 

¿A dónde va, cuando se va la llama? 

¿A dónde va, cuando se va la rosa? 

¿Qué regazo, qué esfera deleitosa, 

¿qué amor de Padre la abraza y la reclama?. 

Esta vez como aquella, aunque distinto; 

el Hijo ascendió al Padre en pura flecha. 

Hoy va la Madre al Hijo, va derecha 

al Uno y Trino, el trono en su recinto.. 

No se nos pierde, no; se va y se queda. 

Coronada de cielos, tierra añora 

y baja en descensión de Mediadora, 

rampa de amor, dulcísima vereda. 

El Apocalipsis pinta la imagen prodigiosa de una mujer glorificada que aparece encinta, a punto de dar a luz y acosada por un "enorme dragón rojo con siete cabezas y diez cuernos y siete diademas en las cabezas, dispuesto a tragarse el niño en cuanto naciera". El águila de Patmos vio en esta revelación a la Iglesia, en su doble dimensión de luminosidad y de oscuridad, de grandeza y de tribulación, coronada de estrellas y gritando de dolor. María, Madre del Hijo de Dios, Cabeza de la Iglesia que va a nacer, es también la primera hija privilegiada de la Iglesia, triunfadora del dragón que quiere devorar a la Madre y al Niño, pero fracasa en su intento porque el niño fue arrebatado al cielo junto al trono de Dios, mientras ella ha escapado al desierto. El misterio del mal en el mundo produce escándalo en el algunos hombres. ¿Cómo Dios permite todo si lo puede arreglar todo? No se tiene en cuenta la libertad humana que Dios respeta conscientemente; ni la limitación del mundo creado, con sus leyes inmutables; ni la maldad del maligno, que intenta devorar a los hijos de la mujer mientras vivan en este destierro. Ni que Dios a ese mundo dolorido, probado y exhausto, le tiende la Mano Poderosa, que ayuda y restauradora del bien. 

El pueblo de Israel fue llevado por Dios al desierto, como la esposa de Oseas, para hablarle al corazón y fortalecerlo en el amor y en el coraje para implantar el reino de nuestro Dios, victoria que ya llega. Con María estamos todos en el desierto con la fuerza del Espíritu que nos ayuda a vencer los peligros del erial. 

Pero si María ha sido subida al cielo, como tipo de la Iglesia, también lo será la Iglesia. Aunque hoy nos sintamos terrenos y pecadores, porque en el desierto la Iglesia es a la vez santa y pecadora, seremos en el mundo futuro, resucitados y enaltecidos. Mirad cómo la traen entre alegría y algazara, al palacio real ante la presencia del rey, prendado de la belleza de la reina, enjoyada de oro a la derecha del rey. Contemplad cómo le dice el rey: “Escucha, hija, inclina el oído a las palabras enamoradas que brotan de mi corazón encendido contemplando tu hermosura (Sal 44). Y gozad con El ejército de los ángeles que está lleno de alegría y de fiesta". ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! (Lc 1,39). Salta también de gozo Juan en el seno de Isabel. 

La fiesta de los ángeles del cielo se comunica por anticipado al pueblo de la montaña, donde, con la prisa del amor, llegó María, con un Jesús chiquitín en sus entrañas. El Espíritu Santo invadió aquella casa e hizo cantar a aquellas mujeres dichosas las grandezas y maravillas del Señor. María se sintió inspirada y proclamó el Magnificat cantando su alegría porque el Señor ha mirado la humillación de su esclava. Y como supo que la llamarían feliz todas las generaciones de los hombres, lo cantó sin complejos. Y enalteció la misericordia que tiene y que tendrá siempre, de generación en generación, con su fieles amados. Y afirmó que no se había olvidado de lo prometido a nuestros primeros padres, a Abraham y su descendencia para siempre: porque una mujer aplastaría la cabeza de la serpiente, el dragón rojo. María, ya glorificada en el cielo, no se olvida de los hermanos de su Hijo, que se debaten en las tentaciones y asechanzas del dragón en el desierto. Porque en el cielo no ha dejado su oficio salvador, sino que continúa alcanzándonos los dones de la eterna salvación. La Madre de Jesús, de la misma manera que ya glorificada en el cielo en cuerpo y alma, es imagen y principio de la Iglesia que llegará a la perfeccion en la vida futura, así también en esta tierra antecede como una antorcha radiante de esperanza segura y de consuelo para el pueblo de Dios peregrinante.
